Recast converts and compresses files on your iPhone or iPad - images, video, audio, PDFs, GIFs and Live Photos - without uploading anything.
Need help or found a bug? Email leonfigueira@gmail.com, or use Send feedback inside the app, which attaches a short diagnostic report.
Recast has two tabs along the bottom: Convert and Compress. Both work entirely on your device.
How do I convert a Live Photo? Use the dedicated Live Photos button. It opens straight to your Live Photos, and you can export the still image, the video, or both.
It says it can't reach my target file size. Recast first tries to hit your target while keeping the video watchable. If the smallest sensible setting is still above your target, it says so rather than quietly producing something unusable. If you genuinely need it smaller, use Force it - that drops the resolution as far as it takes. The result will look noticeably rough, which is why it's a separate, deliberate button.
My photo came out rotated. Recast writes the orientation into the pixels for formats that can't store an orientation tag, such as PNG and BMP, so this shouldn't happen. If you do see it, please send feedback with the original file.
A large file is taking a while. Long videos and multi-page PDFs are processed a piece at a time so they don't exhaust memory. You can cancel at any point, and a cancelled conversion leaves your original untouched.
Where did my converted file go? Nowhere on its own - Recast only writes a file when you choose to save or share it. Working copies live in temporary storage and are cleared automatically.
Does it work offline? Yes. Recast never needs a network connection; every conversion runs on your device.
Recast collects no data and uploads no files. See the Privacy Policy.
